Photos From The Pennsylvania Kayaker

After much searching I found that the Ruin Walls of Mystery were for of an old Knickerbocker Ice Company Building.  The walls are absolutely huge and are about a 20 minute walk upstream of the Bridgeport (Upper Marian) Boathouse.

Today I took a look around the abandoned distillery buildings at Linfield Industrial Park.   The place is overgrown and I was able to check out several older (falling down) buildings and one of the warehouses and a bottling building.    Not as interesting as the mental hospital, but it had it charms.

I am now licking my sticker bush wounds (not literally), taking pills for my bum back and contemplating my next abandoned building photoshoot.  :)

History --

Pennhurst State School and Hospital, Spring City, PA was opened in 1908 and closed in 1987.

The State School and Hospital provided housing, treatment, education and vocational training of adults and children with mental and physical disabilities.  Most patients were sent here by there families. 

In the 1970s, the hospital was involved in a class-action suit and was found guilty in 1977 of violating patient's constitutional rights.  Patients were beaten, sexually assaulted and put in isolation for long periods of time.

The suit ordered that Pennhurst be closed and that residents be placed in suitable "community living arrangements".  In 1987, the facility was closed and patients were either released or moved moved to other facilities.

The Pennsylvania Kayaking and Canoeing Group is the place for those interested in paddling their kayak and canoe in Pennsylvania and beyond for free with like-minded paddlers.

Group outings are conducted year round within PA, NJ, NY, MD, DE and other nearby states. We welcome everyone to paddle with us as peers. Paddling trips include, everything from easy flat water to high-speed and long distance open water outings.
